It started with a story in a school magazine. The magazine was free, and as a student everything that is free is worth it. I myself had done something with judo, but that was a bit of a disappointment. It does not work on the street. And then to read about ninjas, how cool is that. After my education, I wanted to do something with Japanese Martial Art. So a quick search on the internet. After the first lesson it was clear; this is not comparable to judo. After getting the 5th kyu I may not consider myself a beginner anymore, but the end is far from clear. Dutch Combat Defense is a martial art with many facets. Every time it is astonishing to experience how in an attack the kancho very quickly and effectively reverses the roles. I should not forget to tap out, because Dutch Combat Defense  is nothing more than a euphemism for painful. But no pain, no gain. And it all seems as simple when teachers show it to you. The 5th kyu is halfway the black belt, something tells me that this was the easy half.
And did I work for me? Certainly.

1) First, it is good for the condition. Because without a condition, a fight ends quickly.
2) With meditation I became aware of energy flows. And I try to steer and influence it.
3) In New York I accidentally made a front-roll while cycling. Just a matter of a pit overlooked, blocking front brakes and good roll over the shoulder, with bicycle and all. I had no scratch, but there were some people worried about what happened.
4) And there is a burglar in the Netherlands who had to buy new tools. He was so stupid to attack me with a crowbar. The strange thing is that I do not remember the attack itself. But because of all that practice, there flipt a switch in my head, and half a second later the guest was disarmed and ran away. Yes very effective that Dutch Combat Defense.

This training has made me the person I am now.
I started practicing this martial art at the age of fourteen. Before that time I was very insecure. I was also bullied a lot which made the situation worse.
I could not cope with the anger I had and that was reflected in tantrums, which I then reacted to the one who teased me.
By practicing this martial art I have managed to keep my anger under control and I no longer suffer from tantrums.

Furthermore, the sport has also ensured that I have created a strong personality.
I saw that many of my old friends wanted to belong to a group in high school because it gave them a sense of strength and certainty.
Because of this martial art I had already built up this feeling of strength and certainty in my character, so that I did not need the feeling to belong to a group.
Furthermore, it was also the case that the group leader often bullied me, but I did not really react to that and that frustrated him even more because I saw him as an idiot.
What I regretted is that my old friends did not even helped me and just laughed. They were probably afraid to be expelled from the group.

This martial art has also increased my perseverance and that has ensured that I commit 110% to what I do.
This is how I see that: I continue my work, where others stop, because the work is too much or too monotonous. I look for solutions where others see problems.
Thanks to this martial art, I also believe that you can achieve everything in your life. The only thing you have to have is a goal. What do you want to achieve? Then try to do everything to achieve that goal.
It will not be easy, because you will have setbacks, but then you have to persevere and if you do that often enough, you will eventually reach your goal.
Life is not easy, but those who are happy are those who have struggled to achieve that where others have given up.
It is up to you what you think happiness means for you. For me that is, that I can be myself and that people accept me as the person I am and not for what I have.

Already as a child I was interested in fightingsports and martial arts, which led me to visit different dojos to see what suits me and something I could defend myself with. I had been training judo and kempo for a long time, but after I found out that it did not work for me, I quit it.
Until my mother took home a magazine from the Iga Warriors, which she had received from a colleague who had a child who trained there. So I left it a while in my cupboard to collect dust until I decided to go for a trial lesson.
The first lesson was so good that I immediately signed up. The wide range of techniques and hard training really appealed to me. The fact that you learn to fight in different ways had persuaded me.
After only 3 months, there was evidence that I had made the right choice. For the first time, I was able to defend myself well in a street fight. On the way to a cinema I and a friend got lost, where we walked past a group who apparently thought we were looking for trouble. After it turned out that talking to them did not help and we were attacked, I managed to get myself out of the fight by applying the basic techniques that I had learned. Although I had received a few punches, I managed to win and walk away with my friend.
Given that the basis of the style already worked for me, I started to look forward to what the kancho had in store for me. Now, 13 years later, I still enjoy the dojo with great pleasure, and I do not intend to change that!
